HPC4Copernicus

In the context of the Copernicus ground segment, ESA faces the challenge of guaranteeing the continuity of ongoing operations at the highest level. At the same time, new developments and trends in information technology must constantly be considered as candidates for the evolution of the ground segment. 
This must happen while taking into account both technical and financial aspects. 
To support these goals, the DFD team is investigating the possibilities of realizing the seamless integration of HPC and cloud into the Copernicus production workflows. In addition to the technical analysis, a prototype implementation will also be created. 

Using the "terrabyte" HPDA platform, DLR-DFD will set up an HPC, a cloud and a hybrid environment and integrate and measure exemplary test cases in all three environments and evaluate their performance. The result will give ESA important clues about the strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches for their use cases.
