ROSS – ESA ROSE-L Ocean Science Study

This ESA-funded project is the Ocean Science Study for the upcoming ROSE-L SAR mission and is led by MET Norway.

Based on the SAR-SeaStaR algorithm developed by DLR for the retrieval of sea state parameters from SAR image features, the applicability of existing C-band and X-band model functions to L-band data will be investigated. Furthermore, the benefit of additional image features for directional wave information will be analyzed.

This project complements the ROSE-L ocean processor development activities within the RL2Ocean project, in which DLR is leading the software development and implementation of the sea state retrieval algorithm.

Sea state processing with SAR-SeaStaR
Example of processing the sea state during a strong storm in the North Sea in October 2023, which caused a series of damages and destruction in the coastal areas. Shown is the significant wave height estimated from SAR acquisitions of the ESA Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite with DLR’s algorithm SAR-SeaStaR. The sea state module for the ROSE-L Level-2 Ocean Processor will be based on this algorithm.
