PARADE: Next-Generation Hold-Down and Release Mechanisms (HDRM)
PARADE
For most space missions, stowing and securing critical structures like solar panels or antennas before launch—and reliable deployment once in orbit—is vital. This is accomplished using Hold-Down and Release Mechanisms (HDRMs).
Key Technological Features
Fast Impulse Activation: Triggered by a short 100 ms current pulse (up to 4 A @ 20 °C) for rapid and repeatable release performance.
Low-Shock Release: Enabled by a gradual release of stored strain during the unlocking of the preloaded joint (implemented at preloads >18 kN).
On-Site Reset Capability: Can be completely reset within seconds with a few simple hand movements—without replacing any parts.
Fully Redundant Design: Engineered to meet the highest safety and reliability standards of space missions.
Seamless Integration & Reduced Complexity The PARADE HDRMs feature a threaded interface that allows the release bolt to attach directly. This smart design eliminates the need for separate interfaces or extra adapters, keeping the overall system simple and lightweight.
Drastic Cost and Test Effort Reduction Thanks to the use of Shape Memory Alloys (SMA) and a low-complexity design, the mechanisms can be reset on-site in a matter of seconds. This drastically reduces testing effort and overall project costs during ground operations.
Simultaneous Multi-Activation With an ultra-short activation time of less than 100 ms under ambient conditions, the PARADE technology allows for the synchronous triggering of multiple release nuts. This capability is critical for complex maneuvers such as landing leg release of future reusable launcher.
