The "Big Shaker" is a test facility of the Institute of Space Systems for the qualification of space systems and components by means of mechanical vibration tests.
Space structures are exposed to intense, quasi-static and dynamically mechanical accelerations, particularly during launch. The test laboratory is responsible for the qualification of components and systems for space by carrying out simulations of the vibrations experienced during the launch, as well as by verifying analytical calculations for the structures and checking the results of finite-element calculations. To qualify flight hardware, the laboratory operates in accordance with the clean room requirements established in ISO-8.
In addition to standard tests, further vibration tests are carried out at cryogenic temperatures; qualifying components under these conditions is also of interest for the field of launcher technology. Besides space applications, the test laboratory is also used by customers coming from railway, ground-based transport and from other industrial areas.
This test laboratory is accredited in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for mechanical dynamic load testing by means of vibration and shock devices. The extent of the accreditation for mechanical load testing also includes other Standards, such as: ECSS-EST-10-03C Space Engineering Testing, MIL- STD-810 G Environmental Test Methods, DIN EN 61373 (IEC) shock and vibrations tests for railway applications, NASA-STD-7003 Pyroshock Test Criteria, as well as the aviation Standard EUROCAE RTCA DO-160C.
