8th European weather radar conference successfully finished
Die European Conference on Radar in Meteorology and Hydrology (ERAD 2014) took place 1-5 September, 2014 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany). The DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics organized this meeting together with the department of research and the president's office of the German Weather Service (DWD). The conference was the eighth one of its kind which is biennially takes place at different locations in Europe. The first ERAD was initiated in Bologna (Italy) commonly by Franco Prodi (CNR) and Peter Meischner (formerly at IPA). This year 370 scientists from about 40 countries gathered with 365 contributions. Topics of the conference included the quantitative determination of precipitation with polarimetric weather radars for hydrological applications, data quality and signal processing, new technologies, studies on the generation of precipitation and applications of radar devices on aircraft and satellites for the observation of clouds and precipitation systems. Scientists of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics presented studies on the data quality and results of radar measurements and lightning detections as wells as the first radar and lidar measurements on the new research aircraft HALO.
