The institute's research focal points are selected in such a way that all core areas crucial to an overall understanding of the atmosphere are covered. This creates and maintains competences that enable the institute to work on all of DLR's key atmospheric-related research tasks.

The following tasks are covered:

  • the development of sensors for Earth observation
  • the observation and modelling of elements and processes in the climate system for improved forecasting of future developments and for the evaluation of climate protection strategies
  • the evaluation of the climate impact of air traffic and other modes of transport
  • the development of mitigation strategies for the climate impact of air traffic,
  • the development of forecasts and analysis of observations to increase the safety of air traffic and the robustness of the air traffic system or the optimisation of renewable energy generation (such as the optimisation of solar and wind energy systems in relation to atmospheric effects).
