Geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) occur during strong changes in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by solar storms. They can generate electric currents in conductive infrastructure on the ground and represent an important interface between space weather and technical infrastructure.

The institute investigates the magnetic and ionospheric causes of such rapid field changes, analyzes measurement data from geomagnetic observatories, and develops models to quantify GIC risks. The goal is to better understand these processes and contribute to the assessment of extreme space weather events.
