Atmospheric coupling
The Earth’s atmosphere is a coupled system in which processes originating in the lower atmospheric layers extend all the way into the ionosphere and thermosphere. Atmospheric waves and phenomena influence the structure and variability of the ionospheric plasma even under quiet conditions.
The institute investigates these vertical and horizontal coupling mechanisms using a combination of observations and modeling. The goal is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between the neutral lower atmosphere, the middle atmosphere, and the ionized space environment. The aim is to analyze their effects on radio wave propagation and, consequently, on navigation and communication systems.
