With the HELIX helium lidar system, the institute has a unique instrument for studying the upper atmosphere. Lidar-based measurements of metastable helium allow for the investigation of dynamic and transport processes in the thermosphere. HELIX provides new insights into vertical coupling processes, atmospheric waves, and the upper atmosphere’s response to solar and geomagnetic drives.
