  • DLR and seven universities, colleges and non-university research institutions presented the research results of the "Future Lab Mobility" at a closing event.
  • In the project, the researchers developed innovative mobility concepts, scenarios for future transport solutions and intelligent vehicle functions and systems.
  • Focal points: Digitalisation, autonomous driving, micromobility

Scientists and researchers from a total of eight universities, colleges and non-university research institutions presented their key findings from the "Future Lab Mobility" research project on 20 March. Innovative mobility concepts, scenarios for future transport solutions and intelligent vehicle functions and systems were presented. The project was funded with 3.7 million euros by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation.

After five years of intensive digitalisation research, the Future Lab Mobility team presented its key research findings on 20 March 2025 at the Automotive Research Centre Niedersachsen (NFF) in Braunschweig. The Managing Director of the Centre for Digital Innovations Lower Saxony (ZDIN), Dr Patrick Elfert, underlined the success of the Future Lab with significant figures: During its term, further research projects with a funding volume of over 50 million euros were acquired, 162 scientific publications were published and 202 theses were supervised. This shows that the Future Mobility Lab has made a lasting contribution to science, innovation and the training of skilled workers.

The core of the event was the presentation of the research results using test vehicles, exhibits and scientific posters: the researchers investigated the development and validation of intelligent vehicle functions for autonomous driving and developed real and virtual test platforms to test the results. They also conducted research into sensor-based data acquisition and consolidation for autonomous vehicles. Among other things, they designed a machine learning algorithm that efficiently merges different data. The project participants also created scenarios for future mobility and used them to illustrate the changes in passenger and freight transport. In addition, they analysed the use of micromobility with a focus on e-scooters and created a data-based decision-making basis for micromobility providers and for cities and municipalities to (better) plan their fleets.

More detailed information on the research results and the event can be found on the ZDIN website.

About the Future Lab Mobility

The Future Lab Mobility is part of the Centre for Digital Innovation Lower Saxony (ZDIN), which was launched in 2019 by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation. The aim of the ZDIN is to network Lower Saxony's scientists and practice partners for application-oriented research into key digital challenges in various application sectors, including mobility. Scientists from various research disciplines (e.g. computer science, mechanical engineering, geoinformatics, construction technology, economics) from a total of eight universities, colleges and non-university research institutions conducted research in the Future Mobility Lab: Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, German Aerospace Centre, Georg August University Göttingen, Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Leibniz University Hanover, Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences, Braunschweig University of Technology, Clausthal University of Technology. Together with 17 associated partners from the field, the scientists investigated key challenges of future mobility and developed innovative solutions.
