E-World

The decarbonisation of natural gas-based industrial processes requires innovative solutions. At the DLR stand at the  e-world, our institute will be presenting an electric high-temperature heating system that can heat gaseous media up to 1200 °C using electromagnetic induction.

The technology utilises ceramic, inductively heated elements with a large heat transfer surface and enables contactless heat generation in the megawatt range. With a power density up to four times higher than metallic heating elements, it opens up new possibilities for emission-free power-to-heat applications - even where hydrogen burners were previously required.

Thanks to its corrosion-resistant high-performance ceramics, the induction air heater can generate process heat reliably, efficiently and with a long service life at more than 1000 °C up to the megawatt scale, even in corrosive atmospheres. Its compact design also makes it easy to retrofit existing natural gas burners with minimal conversion work. This clearly sets it apart from the metallic and ceramic resistance heaters available today.

Future users are primarily the process industry - operators of thermal processing plants, especially thermal oxidisers, in the chemical, refractory, ceramics and semiconductor industries. They currently use natural gas or oil burners and can use the new technology to generate their high-temperature process heat in a climate-friendly way.
