Simulation tools

Simulation can be used to analyse and evaluate the objectives of the energy industry and, in particular, to define suitable ways of achieving these objectives. At the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, we develop modelling and simulation tools for scenario creation and techno-economic system modelling and optimisation, among other things. We publish the majority of our modelling developments as open source and thus make them available to other experts.

Airfox

Airfox is a design and simulation tool for fuel cell systems in aviation that is continually being developed further in the Energy System Integration department. At its core, the tool is based on experimental data from stack tests carried out in the group's laboratories. This is supplemented by modeling the auxiliary systems in different levels of detail. The complete model is used to determine system behavior at all points of a flight mission, which then leads to an appropriate overall system design.

CELESTE

The modeling framework CELESTE (Conceptual design of ELectrochemical procEss SysTems and Exergy analysis) offers the possibility to quickly create conceptual models for process systems with electrochemical reactors. The framework allows users to efficiently solve mass and energy balances, form heat exchanger networks and perform exergy analyses for these reactive systems using simplified models of reactors from different manufacturers as well as models of standard process units.

TEMPEST

The simulation environment TEMPEST (Transient Electrochemical Model for Process and Energy Systems) offers the possibility of transient simulation of process engineering systems with electrochemical reactors. The structure of the environment allows the development of operating and control strategies for systems and reactors by using models of reactors from different manufacturers or generic architectures.

TEPET

The TEPET (Techno Economic Process Evaluation Tool) evaluation tool from the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics in Stuttgart offers the possibility of automatically analysing process engineering processes from a technical, economic and ecological perspective. The processes are modelled in a flow diagram simulator (Aspen Plus®) for this purpose.
