TechUPGRADE
TechUPGRADE is an EU-project that aims to develop a ground-breaking, advanced thermochemical technology for waste heat recovery. Our solution efficiently recovers waste heat from industrial processes and raises it to temperatures of 150 - 250 degrees Celsius.

In the EU, the majority of process heat demand is met by fossil fuels, making it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For this reason, decarbonising the heat sector by using renewable heat sources for process heat and improving the energy efficiency of industrial processes is crucial to achieving the EU's goal of developing a GHG-neutral economy by 2050. Utilising waste heat from industrial processes is a challenge that many have faced, but TechUPGRADE is setting a new course. A ground-breaking thermochemical solution raises the recovery of waste heat to the 150-250°C range with high efficiency.
The TechUPGRADE-solution
- can be easily integrated with all renewable technologies, including solar thermal systems;
- consumes almost no electricity and has significantly high energy and exergy efficiency;
- can be much more cost effective than competing technologies due to the expected long service life, simplicity of design and operating mechanism, and method of integrating low value heat sources;
- can be used for a variety of integration options, low temperature heat sources and different heat sink temperature levels; and
- can provide storage of recovered waste heat or renewable heat with a simple adjustment if there is a mismatch between the availability of the heat source and the process heat demand.
The project consortium consists of 14 partners, including 5 universities, 3 research centres, 4 SMEs, 1 large company and 1 partner with several industrial end users. This ensures that all the necessary expertise is available for the successful implementation of the project and that the partners complement each other optimally. The technology will be demonstrated in different designs and integrations in two relevant environments in Sweden and Germany with 35 kW and 10 kW high temperature heat output capacities.

Aim of the project
This project aims to develop and validate (in the relevant environment to achieve TRL 5) a novel thermochemical technology that can very efficiently, safely, cost-effectively and sustainably raise the waste heat of industrial processes to a much higher temperature level (the target temperature here is 150-250 degrees Celsius).
