On 6 July 2017 astronaut-trainee Insa Thiele-Eich welcomed the one millionth visitor to the “Wonders of Nature” exhibition at Gasometer Oberhausen. The highlight of the exhibition is an enormous earth sculpture designed by EOC. Until 30 November visitors have the opportunity to view our planet from the perspective of an astronaut and be amazed at the intelligence of animal and plant life depicted in some 150 large-format photographs by internationally renowned nature photographers.
Only earth observation data can let us see our home planet from space. A trip in the glass panorama elevator up to the roof of the 118 meter tall Gasometer allows a view of Earth from the perspective of a geostationary satellite. The projection was crafted from over ten different global remote sensing data sets.
With a million visitors, “Wonders of Nature” is the most popular exhibition that has been shown to date in this industrial monument and one of the most successful temporary exhibitions ever shown in Germany. Astronaut-trainee Thiele-Eich was also enthusiastic. The earth sculpture increases her anticipation of her first mission, “Here I can even get a sense of how fantastic it must feel to see this planet from space.”
