300,000 Visitors – EOC Earth Sculpture
Over two storeys in the former gas storage facility the exhibition contemplates the changes on our planet caused by human activities using large-format prize-winning photographs and films. The Earth sculpture suspended in the 100 metre high airspace of Gasometer Oberhausen allows viewers to experience an overview effect that otherwise only astronauts are privileged to see. On a balloon with a diameter of 20 metres and a surface area of 1,256 square metres, 13 projectors show a 20-minute long animation at a resolution of 72,000,000 pixels.
The animation was created at EOC using earth observation data that EOC scientists otherwise use to monitor and analyse the consequences and dynamics of global changes for our ecosystem. On the second storey visitors can gain an insight into the potential of satellite earth observation with the help of 20 EOC-designed globes. The exhibition is open until the end of the year.
