EOC scientists receive DLR Science Price 2021

Dr. Homa Ansari, Dr. Francesco de Zan and Mr. Alessandro Parizzi were awarded the DLR-Science Award 2021 für their work, “Study of Systematic Bias in Measuring Surface Deformation with SAR Interferometry”, which was published in 2020 in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing. The outstanding scientific and technological achievements of these researchers at EOC could thereby be honoured. The authors demonstrated that unknown and therefore unconsidered errors arise using the Small Baseline Algorithm Subset (SBAS) methodology. Although their first presentations were very critically received in the science community, the team could not only definitively confirm the existence of the error source but also quantify it, making it correctable. Their critics were convinced by their outstanding scientific approach. Current and future radar mission profit from these insights since significantly higher measuring accuracy can now be achieved.
