We are delighted to announce the establishment of our new DLR Institute for Frontier Materials on Earth and in Space!
The institute is a merger of the former Institute for Materials Research and the Institute for Materials Physics in Space and officially opened its doors on 1 April 2025.
Our mission
Our mission is to research and develop materials for aerospace, energy, transport and security applications, taking into account all stages of development – from design to the finished component.
Through our interdisciplinary approach, we develop sustainable, digitally integrated and resilient material solutions for applications that can be used both on Earth and in space.
At the heart of our research is a systematic approach based on the four key pillars of the material development chain:
Design · Discovery · Demonstration · Deployment
With a unique combination of expertise and world-class research facilities, including our facilities for research under terrestrial and extraterrestrial conditions, we are laying the foundations for technological breakthroughs in aviation, space, energy, transport and security applications.
