The demonstrator shows AI algorithms that use acceleration sensor data from German rail networks to enable axle counting, train classification, speed prediction and the detection of anomalies and defective wheel sets. In December 2025, the DLR Expo was hosted by DLR to promote dialogue between research and industry. The event focused on market-oriented research and the development of artificial intelligence. Twelve DLR institutes presented their latest AI projects through a variety of live demonstrations. Prof Frank Köster and Dr Simon Odrowski gave an overview of business-relevant AI research areas in their presentation. During direct dialogue with the relevant scientists, guests discussed the potential of the presented AI applications and explored possible collaborations.

AI applications offer efficiency gains through process automation, assist with product development and enable new business models. At the DLR Institute for AI Safety and Security, teams are researching and developing secure, market-oriented AI applications. As well as operational and attack security, their work covers topics such as data sovereignty, transparency, standardisation, and promoting innovation, for instance through human–AI interaction and quantum AI.
