The team Maritime Services focuses on the development and trial of radio navigation-based services for the maritime PNT system.

On the one hand this requires that classical techniques are fitted to enable the provision of services for modernized and future GNSS. For this purpose it is necessary, that the experimental system in the Research Port Rostock will be equipped with new processor chains to perform the service provision. Furthermore experimental investigations are necessary to re-determine thresholds for the reliable realization of system monitoring and steering. Here the development focus lays on phase-based augmentation services for the 2nd GNSS generation.

On the other hand the maritime PNT system should be optimized in such a way that the provision of PNT data can be realized in a needs-based manner as well as efficient regarding resources and costs. Experimental based target-performance comparisons are an appropriate mean for founded decision about applicability and usability of specific technologies. Therefore the team uses the Research Port Rostock as test field to evaluate the performance of standard technologies as well as own developments under application conditions. Here, the enrichment of the MGBAS test facility with suitable monitoring function is considered as efficient approach for such investigations. By the growing availability of independent and more powerful radio navigation systems can be expected that the enhancement of space-based services results into an improvement of PNT data provision. In this context the future role of PNT relevant services should be re-evaluated. For this purpose the team investigates an alternative approach, where PNT-relevant safety information steers the application of available radio navigation signals and PNT techniques in the service area.

The development of algorithms and methods as software is realized in specially created framework, designed by the department to enable the testing of functionality and capability of techniques with simulated and real data. Basis for experimental tests and validation is the Experimentation and Validation network (EVnet) developed by the department itself. Both tools allow a fast porting of own developments from the software environment into the application environment. Development work of the group deals also with the further improvement of both scientific-technical tools, e.g. by extension of the maritime data server and implementation of additional support and control functions.

In addition the research group acts as advisor in the e-NAV Committee of the IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities) and in the national “e-navigation” correspondence group. In both boards we are involved in the development of PNT-relevant standardization documents.
