OSIRISv2

In use for earth observation

OSIRISv2 is the further development of version 1 towards higher data rates. OSIRISv2 was integrated into the DLR satellite BiROS as a payload. BiROS was launched into an orbit with an altitude of 510 km on 22.06.2016. Together with the TET-1 satellite, it orbits the earth in the FireBIRD mission for early fire detection on the earth's surface and makes an important contribution to climate research.

The technology of OSIRISv2 is based on a configuration similar to the previous generation, but OSIRISv2 has been expanded to include a so-called tracking sensor, which can measure the alignment to the optical ground station and thus improve the position control. The position control of the satellite is still used to align the laser beam, but in a closed control loop, so that the residual errors can be reduced. This makes it possible to reduce the divergence and thus increase the performance on the receiver. This enables the data rate to be increased up to the gigabit range with the same optical output power as v1.

OSIRISv2 was incorporated as a payload into the BIROS satellite. The DLR satellite BIROS was launched on June 22nd, 2016 into an orbit with an orbital height of approximately 510 km. Together with the TET-1 satellite, it orbits the earth in the FireBIRD mission for early fire detection on earth’s surface and makes an important contribution to climate research.
