REACTS

The project REACTS (Responsive European Architecture for Space) is funded by the EU through the European Defence Fund (EDF-2022-RA-SPACE-RSS). Led by the DLR RSC³, 39 European institutions and companies from 13 European Union countries and Norway are working together on a resilient and scalable architecture of responsive space capabilities for European defense. REACTS aims to pave the way for a future European responsive network capable of placing satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) within 72 hours to cover specific strategic, operational and tactical needs.  This is intended to close capability gaps resulting from the lack, failure or degradation of existing space assets. This is particularly important for space-based reconnaissance and surveillance and for satellite communications. Based on user requirements, the project will analyze and compare architectures and holistic solutions that cover the launch, space and ground segments. In addition, interface standards will be proposed for all segments, a possible and sensible holistic operating concept (CONOPS) will be developed, a strategy for future developments will be laid out and the potential of such a Responsive Space System will be evaluated on the basis of case studies.

Participating institutes

Institute of Space Propulsion

The DLR Institute of Space Propulsion has unique expertise in Europe in the development and operation of engine test rigs. Since 1959, engines for launchers and space systems have been tested and further developed at the DLR site in Lampoldshausen.

Space Operations and Astronaut Training

DLR Space Operations is the central institution for spaceflight operations in Germany. This responsibility includes satellite missions for Earth observation, science and communication missions as well as the exploration of the Solar System and human spaceflight missions.

Institute of Space Systems

The Institute of Space Systems analyses and evaluates complex space systems from a technical, economic and socio-political perspective.

Institute of Optical Sensor Systems

The Institute of Optical Sensor Systems investigates and develops active and passive optical sensor systems for satellites, flying platforms and robotic systems.

Institute of Communications and Navigation

The Institute of Communications and Navigation develops and investigates new systems and methods for radio transmission and radiolocation.

Institute of Flight Guidance

The Institute of Flight Guidance is working on the development and application of future processes and technologies for the integrated airborne and ground-based guidance of aircraft.
