Department: Application and Evaluation

The Application and Evaluation (ANE) department will develop distributed multiscale and multirate simulation technologies as well as development processes for simulations and physical test fields. Appropriate quality and validation criteria for simulations, digital twins and test fields will be developed by ANE together with THD and EVO.

In further cooperation with other DLR institutes, ANE will implement simulations and test fields that fulfil these validation criteria. The resulting simulation platforms and test fields will form the basis for the integration and evaluation of THD and EVO content. The evaluation feedback will be forwarded to THD and EVO for continuous improvement of their methods and tools. ANE will act as a "gatekeeper" for all railway and automotive related research content of the institute to provide methods and tools for use by external partners. The approved methods and tools will be integrated by ANE into industrial processes for systems engineering, system operation and quality assurance.

Group: Ground Transportation

The research of the group "Ground Transportation" focuses on the design, expansion and operation of test and development environments for road and rail transport. In addition to the evaluation and applicability of the methods and tools developed by the THD and EVO departments, prototype assistant systems are also modelled and developed. The focus here is on analysing extra-functional requirements along the entire system development process with a focus on test strategies.

In addition, verification and validation approaches in the operational and test modes of transport are researched. These investigations serve to evaluate safety-critical systems and are carried out using co-simulation environments and testbeds.
