Research opportunities in test facilities and laboratories
The technical centre of the DLR Institute of Solar Research in Oldenburg offers researchers ideal conditions for investigating various coatings. Using methods such as magnetron sputtering, physical vapour deposition (PVD), lamination and the Langumir-Blodgett process, researchers can apply a wide variety of coatings to samples measuring up to 30 by 30 square centimetres.
The researchers benefit from another test facility and a laboratory at the Plataforma Solar de Almería of the Spanish research centre CIEMAT. Here, they investigate the resistance of new coatings and materials under extreme climatic conditions in accelerated climate chambers and outdoor weathering test stands. The equipment with special measuring and analysis instruments makes it possible to precisely determine the characteristics of the new materials.
Other key research topics
A particular research interest is the integration of photovoltaic cells in solar mirrors of solar thermal power plants. Here, the right coating plays a key role in achieving optimum results in terms of energy efficiency and reliability. Research efforts are also focussing on anti-soiling coatings, which improve the self-cleaning properties of surfaces and can therefore reduce maintenance costs.
Another promising approach is the development of windows with adjustable light transmission for agrivoltaics. Thanks to special coatings, these windows can not only serve as energy sources, but also control the light intensity as required. This opens up new possibilities for the sustainable use of agricultural land.
Coating technologies in the future of solar technology
Advances in coating technologies play a decisive role in the future of solar technology in the context of the energy transition. Through the targeted application of different processes and intensive research into new materials, DLR and CIEMAT scientists are creating innovative solutions that make a sustainable contribution to the efficient use of renewable energies. These developments not only have potential for industry, but are also of great importance for political decision-makers and the general public on the way to a sustainable energy future.
