HALC – Development of an automated truck with driver monitoring system
The aim of the HALC project is to develop, demonstrate and evaluate functions for the automation of large commercial vehicles (HGVs), specifically automated lateral and longitudinal guidance for motorways. In such a system (automation level 2 according to the SAE classification), however, the drivers must be attentive at all times and monitor the functionality of the automation in order to be able to intervene appropriately in the event of system errors or failures. In order to ensure this continuous monitoring of the drivers, DLR is developing a driver monitoring system that recognises if the drivers take their attention away from the driving task for too long and warns them accordingly in such a case.
To this end, a driver model for estimating the focus of attention is being developed and evaluated on the basis of various data (eye tracking, video recording and input data) from simulator and real driving, and a human-machine interface for communicating the corresponding warning to the driver is being designed. The simulator drives at DLR will take place in a modular mock-up large vehicle, which will be converted into a realistic truck cockpit for the project. The driver model will then be integrated into a lorry in order to evaluate and demonstrate it in conjunction with the developments of the other participants. The composition of the consortium from suppliers (ZF/WABCO), SMEs (Interactive Minds and OKIT), applied research participants (DLR and accident research at MHH) and end users (Spedition Bartkowiak) ensures a high level of practical relevance and technological maturity of the project results.
