The DLR Institute of Aeroelasticity conducts research in the fields of aeroelasticity, structural dynamics, unsteady aerodynamics and dynamic loads. The employees in Göttingen focus on theoretical-numerical and experimental investigations dedicated to aircraft, helicopters, turbomachinery and wind turbines applications.

Aeroelastic Design

In the research topic of aeroelastic design, we deal with various design tasks in the context of the aeroelastic design of an aircraft, an aircraft component or a wind tunnel model. The development of methods ranges from conceptual design and preliminary design to detailed design for manufacturing, in particular for wind tunnel models.

Aeroelasticity of Turbomachinery

As we envision the future of aviation, with 2050 as a pivotal milestone, a significant challenge emerges: reducing aircraft energy requirements by an ambitious 50%. This endeavor demands a comprehensive strategy, encompassing innovative propulsion concepts, streamlined engine integration, and the development of lighter, more efficient engine components capable of operating at extended ranges.

Aeroelastic Simulation of Wind Turbines

For the aeroelastic simulation and analysis of wind turbines, models of different levels of complexity are used. The vibrational behavior due to the interaction of elastic structure and unsteady aerodynamics is of particular interest. We develop methods to analyze the influence of parameter uncertainties on the system dynamics and to compute operational loads for the structural design of wind turbine components.

Aeroelastic Stability and System Response

The major part of the activities in the field of aeroelastic stability and system response is concerned with the aeroelasticity of civil transport aircraft. However, small business aircraft and glider planes are also subject of investigation. Finally, the work includes contributions to the analysis of helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft.

Aeroelastic System Identification

In the research topic of Aeroelastic System Identification, we specialize in the methods for experimental and operational modal analysis. These methods are applied to aircraft, helicopters, EVTOLs and drones during Ground Vibration Testing (GVT), flight vibration testing and wind tunnel testing. The research work includes both, the development of new methods as well as the application of uniquely developed methods in the aerospace sector.

Aeroelastic Wind Tunnel Experiments

In the Aeroelastic Wind Tunnel Experiments research topic, we are dedicated to planning, conducting and analysing complex experiments in wind tunnels in order to investigate the Fluid-Structure Interaction at the limit of aerodynamic areas with high transonic speeds and/or detached flows

Loads Analysis

The computation of flight and ground loads acting on the aircraft structure is one of the main tasks in the design and certification process of an aircraft. The term loads comprises all steady and unsteady, internal and external forces and moments that do mechanical work on the aircraft structure.

Measurement and Testing Technology

In the research field of measuring and testing technology, we are involved in the development of miniaturised, multi-channel measuring electronics and measuring amplifiers for rotating systems up to 10,000 rpm and accelerations of up to 150G. Miniaturised circuits using chip bonding technology fitted to ceramic substrates are also developed to resolve issues regarding restricted space circumstances.

Structural Dynamic Experiments

In the research topic Structural Dynamics Testing we deal with the planning, execution and analysis of structural dynamics experiments on small wind tunnel models through to ground vibration tests on large commercial aircraft. Therefore, we constantly developing the necessary software, measurement technology and test methods.

Unsteady Aerodynamics

Unsteady aerodynamics plays a critical role in aerospace engineering, exploring the intricate dynamic nature of the aerodynamic forces and moments generated as flexible aircraft or rotorcraft move through fluid flow. Gaining insight into unsteady aerodynamics is essential for designing safer, more efficient aircraft and predicting their dynamic performance in real-world conditions. This blog entry explores the multifaceted realm of unsteady aerodynamics, focusing on modeling, method development, and model validation.

Vibroacoustics

In the research topic of Vibroacoustics we deal with the experimental and numerical analysis and control of structure-borne sound. This includes the study of both the generation and propagation of sound in lightweight structures, as well as methods for its reduction. A wide range of measurement, analysis, and simulation techniques are employed for this purpose.
