The Institute of Aerospace Medicine conducts research at the interface of technology and humans with the aim of improving human health and safety in space, in aviation and on Earth. Our departments in Cologne and Hamburg, which have internationally unique research expertise and state-of-the-art infrastructure, cooperate with leading national and international research institutions and industry.
Institute of Aerospace Medicine
The Institute of Aerospace Medicine with :envihab (from Environmental Habitat) conducts research at the interface of high technologies and humans for health, safety and sustainability in space, in aviation and on Earth. Biomedical and psychological findings and technological developments from our institute address important social challenges and feed into economic trends.
The extreme environmental conditions in space or partly also in aviation, such as weightlessness, increased radiation exposure, isolation, time shifts, altered atmospheric conditions and scarcity of resources, can affect human health and performance. The Institute investigates the mechanisms of these changes in co-operation with leading research institutions, agencies such as ESA and NASA and industry. Systematic ground-based studies on radiation, astro- and gravitational biology in special simulation facilities are complemented by successful investigations in space. Our overarching goal is to conduct research that improves human health in space, in aviation and on Earth.
Based on these findings, applications for diagnostics and prevention are being developed and systematically analyzed that can be used not only in aerospace, but also on earth, for example for healthy ageing. Many years of experience in the selection and support of pilots, air traffic controllers and astronauts form the basis of this work.
