Our new visual identity: Behind the scenes

What unites us as #TeamDLR? Fascination: with what lies ahead; with the new, the unknown and the visionary; with research that opens up new perspectives and drives our society forward. This fascination is reflected in our new visual identity.

In front of the camera are colleagues from DLR. They represent the approximately 12,000 people in #TeamDLR who share this fascination. The glowing trails of light symbolise movement, new horizons and undiscovered dimensions.

All the images were created during photo shoots – entirely without AI – using a long-exposure technique called light painting. By moving light sources through the scene while the shutter is open, the interplay of light, people and movement builds unique images.

Gabriela
What are you working on? “I’m an astrophysicist and I’m researching how galaxies and black holes form. I work at the Institute of Communications and Navigation as the scientific project manager for an ESA (European Space Agency) mission on quantum communication. The mission is of crucial importance for the security of communications on Earth.”
 
What inspires you? “Pushing the boundaries of science is exciting – and often an adventure.”
 
What do you particularly value? “I’m given a great deal of freedom and support to develop in the direction I want to go.”
Tobias
What are you working on? “I’m conducting research at the Institute of Flight Systems on a simulation model that can be used to investigate the physical interaction between humans and machines – for example, how a pilot interacts with the control stick during turbulence. As part of this, I also carry out studies with test subjects on the simulator.”
 
What inspires you? “The laboratory environment, which is unique in the world, where I can test and bring my ideas to life.”
 
What do you particularly value? “The excellent conditions for PhD students and the open, collegial atmosphere.”
Birgit
What are you working on? “I’m an administrator for the site management team in Oberpfaffenhofen and share responsibility for time recording for around 2,300 employees. We’ve introduced a new system – it was a really mammoth task – but the effort was worth it. Many processes now run faster and more efficiently.”
 
What inspires you?
“The great team spirit, the openness within the team and how we’re driving forward the development of our apprentices.”
 
What do you particularly value? “I like the fact that I’m not just doing my job – I can actively help shape things.”
Cédric
What are you working on? “I’m a PhD student at the Remote Sensing Technology Institute. My research focuses on how machine learning methods can analyse satellite images directly on board a satellite, so that important information can be identified while still in space.”
 
What inspires you? “Through my work, I’m helping to tackle societal challenges – for example, by using better forecasts and damage analyses to help reduce the impact of climate-related disasters.
 
What do you particularly value? “The fact that I can do meaningful work and have good opportunities for development.”
Celia
What are you working on? “I’m a postdoctoral researcher at the German Remote Sensing Data Center, where I’m investigating how we can use satellite data to monitor changes in polar and mountainous regions.”
 
What inspires you? “I’m inspired by combining my fascination with snow and ice with modern research, machine learning and big data. It’s exciting to use satellite and field data to study these regions on different scales.”
 
What do you particularly value? “Contributing to a better understanding of our changing cryosphere.”
Lukas
What are you working on? “I work as a design engineer for Systemhaus Technik. We develop and manufacture components for experiments and research facilities – from research aircraft to high-altitude research rockets. I completed my apprenticeship at DLR, then trained as a technician and studied mechanical engineering while working.”
 
What inspires you? “I’m constantly gaining new insights into research.”
 
What do you particularly value? “The tasks are varied and range from concept studies and simulations right through to prototype manufacturing.”
