STARS

Project STARS
The STARS project focuses on the resource-efficient utilisation of industrial by-products for the generation of heat and electricity. Waste streams are repurposed in a meaningful way, thereby strengthening the circular economy.

Within the STARS project, we are working in collaboration with Thyssenkrupp MillServices & Systems, LKW PlasmaCeramic and Fraunhofer UMSICHT to develop an innovative and sustainable solution for industry. The project aims to explore new approaches for the resource-efficient utilisation of industrial by-products while contributing to the energy transition.

The focus lies on investigating steelmaking slags as secondary raw materials. Materials that have often remained underutilised are being examined as feedstock for advanced ceramic components used in concentrated solar power and solar thermal (CSP/T) systems. Such systems play a key role in the efficient generation of heat and electricity from solar energy.

By transforming industrial residues into high-value materials for renewable energy technologies, STARS adopts a holistic approach: on the one hand, it strengthens the circular economy by enabling the meaningful reuse of material streams; on the other hand, it opens up new opportunities for sustainable and future-ready energy systems.

In this way, the project makes a significant contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions, conserving natural resources, and advancing the development of innovative materials for the energy technologies of tomorrow.
