Exchange Forum Transport 2024

A successful DLR Exchange Forum Transport came to an end yesterday. Hosted by Prof. Dr Meike Jipp and the Transport Programme Directorate, the Institute for AI Safety and Security, headed by Prof. Dr Frank Köster, was responsible for the successful implementation and moderation of the event at the Cologne-Porz site.
Prof. Dr. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla welcomed the participants and emphasised the great importance of the next two days to provide impetus for new DLR Transport Research Programme content in a joint dialogue and to think strategically into the next decade. For a sustainable transformation of mobility, DLR research results must become effective through transfer to society and the economy and thus contribute to maintaining value creation and prosperity.
Dr. Martina Gikadi, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) gave a keynote speech on the transport transition from an economic and industrial policy perspective, focusing on both the green and digital transformation in the transport sector.
Prof. Dr Meike Jipp introduced the participants to the strategy for the Transport Programme. The focus was on the transformation of mobility, ensured by innovative solutions from research, knowledge exchange and technology transfer at and through DLR. In this context, DLR Programme Director Transport, Magnus Lamp, gave the participants an overview of the 2025 programme planning and presented new impulse projects for 2025 and guiding concepts for transport system planning.
On this basis, various specialised focal points were set. Against this backdrop, the Institute for AI Safety and Security presented its current focal points and selected project results. These include areas such as AI engineering, human-AI interaction and tools and laboratories for safety analyses in the context of AI. Data and service ecosystems à la GAIA-X, in which federated machine learning approaches are integrated, as well as research activities in the field of quantum computing and quantum machine learning in particular are also among the institute's core topics.
The synchronisation of cooperation in the DLR's transport division was promoted in particular by a workshop in which all participants had the opportunity to contribute their ideas to six strategic projects and thus drive the projects forward. The Institute for AI Safety and Security, with its in-depth knowledge of cyber security in the context of digitalised and AI-based mobility systems, can make valuable contributions to many of these projects. It was spontaneously decided that the Institute for AI Safety and Security would offer special workshops on the topics of data and service ecosystems and generative AI for employees of other institutes
Finally, various concrete project ideas were presented to the participants, to be further developed together in the future. The Institute of Maritime Energy Systems also introduced itself and its focus topics; individual DLR activities for the transfer of research results into practice were also presented.
This event showed clearly that in all deliberations on strategy and strategic projects at DLR, the transferability of research results to commercial applications is always at the centre of considerations - to strengthen the competitiveness of the German economy.
We would like to thank all the speakers, participants and the organization team for making this event possible.
