The research area Virtual MRO focusses on the stakeholders and infrastructure carrying out maintenance activities as well as the detailed digital representation and simulation of maintenance processes.

Digital models of processes, their dependencies, stakeholders, supply chains and resources are being developed alongside methods for the simulation and optimisation of complex process chains. This happens both workshop-centric for an optimal utilisation of available resources, as well as asset-centric as part of a prescriptive maintenance strategy. An automatic generation of such process simulations allows for the evaluation of different alternatives within a multi-objective optimisation and supports the ad-hoc adaptation of maintenance planning. This contributes to increasing the resilience of maintenance in the case of sudden interruptions or unscheduled arisings. The simulation capabilities support decision making in a prescriptive maintenance context.

Data is a key element of digital processes. Approved data specifying maintenance activities is transformed into suitable digital representations. This data feeds simulations and planning, guides practical process execution and provides the foundation for the documentation of actually carried out work. The considered data does not just include descriptive data for the maintenance processes, but any data, which is created and passed on along the way. The structured digital representation of data is the foundation for creating a knowledge database.

Research on the use of large-language-models (LLMs) supports the analysis of text-based content often used to describe findings and anomalies. Combined with a knowledge database, the use of LLMs is being explored in order to support maintenance technicians in their interaction with data systems.

A special focus is dedicated to MRO resource management. The use of resources is closely linked to the ecological impact of maintenance. An increased efficiency in maintenance contributes to a reduction of used resources and emissions. The availability of resources addresses the constitution of spare part inventories, supply chains, human resources and the optimized utilisation of infrastructure.
