The research area Environmental and Circularity Analysis is embedded within the department Product Lifecycle Management, where it develops innovative strategies for sustainability by applying environmental life cycle assessment and circular economy concepts across the aerospace product life cycle.
Using life cycle assessment, we conduct detailed environmental evaluations of aerospace systems with a particular focus on maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Central to this work are life cycle inventories specifically tailored to aeronautic applications, addressing the unique materials and emission patterns encountered by products operating in these environments.
Our research on circular economy contributes to the development of assessment methodologies for circularity-driven design. We focus on foresight strategies to address the availability, reuse, and sustainable management of critical raw materials essential to the aerospace industry.
We perform scenario analyses of technical and operational strategies to evaluate their environmental and circular economy impacts, supporting informed decisions on end-of-life management and lifetime extension of aerospace products. Insights gained from these analyses can be fed back into the early design phases, helping to optimise future aerospace products for sustainability and circularity.
