Canada joins Horizon Europe programme
On 3 July, Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, and Francois-Philippe Champagne, Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, signed the agreement on Canada's participation in the Horizon Europe programme.
Canada joins the growing group of non-EU countries participating in Horizon Europe, the EU's main funding programme for research and innovation. Canada is participating in Pillar II of the programme, which focuses on global challenges such as climate, energy, the digital economy and health. Pillar II is the largest collaborative part of the programme, funding collaborative research projects. As part of this, Canadian institutions can now join and lead research consortia with some of the best research institutions. In addition, Canadian research institutions now have the opportunity to be funded directly by the programme, while Canada contributes to the Horizon Europe budget. However, the minimum rule of at least three partners from three countries must be observed when submitting an application.
Until the signing, there has been a transitional arrangement since November 2023, so that Canadian institutions can already participate in 155 Horizon Europe projects.
