Small particles. Big effect!

At the opening ceremony of the Quantum Year 2025 in Ulm on 14 March, Dr Christian Brand, Deputy Director of the Institute of Quantum Technologies at DLR, emphasised DLR's important role in international quantum research. Together with the University of Ulm, DLR is a leading institution that characterises the research landscape on the Oberer Eselsberg. The Lord Mayor and scientists emphasised the importance of this collaboration for the future of quantum physics.

Promotion of the DLR site in Ulm

The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Tourism is funding a state-of-the-art infrastructure for the production and verification of miniaturised quantum systems with around 2.5 million euros for the "MiniVeriQant" project. The equipment at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Ulm strengthens the quantum technology location and offers cooperation opportunities for research and industry.

One second deviation in 30 million years

A new laser clock from the German Aerospace Centre has achieved a record level of accuracy for optical clocks with gas cells. In 30 million years, it would only be one second off. The quantum properties of iodine molecules set the beat of the laser clock. In future, space-qualified laser clocks should contribute to satellite navigation with centimetre precision and provide a global time standard. They promise new ways for more powerful data transfer in global communication, networked mobility, autonomous driving, trade and logistics. DLR is currently developing and building a space-qualified laser clock as part of the COMPASSO project. From 2027, this will be trialled on the International Space Station for the use of optical clocks on satellites.

Praise and words of warning, a refreshing lecture from the field of physics and an emotional farewell: the IHK Hanau-Gelnhausen-Schlüchtern's annual reception on Monday afternoon at the Congress Park Hanau offered the 260 representatives from business, politics, the judiciary, the military, the church, clubs and associations associations. Freyja Ullinger (PhD student) charmingly explained the "Travelling Salesman Problem", i.e. physics adapted to a business topic.

A Quantum of Science - Live Podcast Prof. Dr. Kai Bongs

As part of the live podcast 'A Quantum of Science', recorded at the ILA 2024 in Berlin, the Head of the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies, Professor Kai Bongs, together with Dr Robert Axmann, Head of the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative, and Dr Lisa Wörner, Head of the DLR Institute of Satellite Geodesy and Inertial Sensing, discuss the potential of quantum technologies to overcome future technological challenges. Among other things, the three scientists will talk about the COMPASSO mission. As part of this mission, improved optical clocks for navigation satellites are being developed at the Institute of Quantum Technologies in Ulm. In future, this new generation of clocks will enable more precise satellite navigation.
