Triple awards at the European Robotics Forum

Triple award for the institute

From March 13 to 15, 2018, this year’s European Robotics Forum took place in Tampere, Finland. As part of the conference, Daniel Leidner and Johannes Englsberger were awarded the Georges Giralt PhD Award for their successfully completed dissertations. In addition, the DLR spin-off Roboception received an award in the Tech Transfer category.

Daniel Leidner received the 2018 George Giralt PhD Award (for best robotics doctorate of 2017) for his dissertation entitled Cognitive Reasoning for Compliant Robot Manipulation. He shares first place with another awardee. Since the award was not conferred last year for organizational reasons, Johannes Englsberger received the 2017 George Giralt PhD Award (for best robotics doctorate of 2016) for his dissertation Combining reduced dynamics models and whole-body control for agile humanoid locomotion. Thus, the two prevailed against four other finalists who were nominees for the best doctorate in Europe. After Alexander Dietrich got the PhD Award in 2016, this was the third time in a row that researchers from the institute were recipients of the first place in the George Giralt PhD Award with their outstanding dissertations.

There was also another reason to celebrate in the Tech Transfer category. The DLR spin-off Roboception founded by former department head Michael Suppa founded together with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alin Albu-Schäffer as representative of DLR was awarded. Congratulations!
