The VITA system (Virtual Therapy Arm) developed by the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics can be tried out in the week starting May 15, 2023 at the XR LAB in Munich.
Based on muscle signals measured by EMG (electromyography) on the forearm, VITA enables natural interaction in VR (virtual reality). Artificial intelligence methods are used here to recognize the intended hand gesture. In this way, the VITA system allows intuitive interaction without having to hold an input device in one's hands. As a result, the VITA system also enables people who have suffered an upper limb amputation, for example, to experience a fully functional hand in VR. The system can be tried out at the XR HUB Bavaria at Burgstraße 4 in Munich from May 15, 2023.
In a validation study, the scientists are working with four clinical institutions in Germany and Italy to investigate whether the VITA system has a demonstrable therapeutic effect.

It is well known that many people with missing limbs suffer from phantom limb pain. Beyond this use case to alleviate this pain, the team is investigating whether the VITA system enables and improves mobilization of the impaired side of the body in people who have suffered a stroke. Initial results have the scientists extremely confident. On 5/15/2013 at 5:00 p.m., DLR employees Markus Nowak, Mathilde Connan, Prof. Claudio Castellini and Robert Klarner will personally present the project.
