EO4CAM Expert Dialogue on Urban Space: Review of the second online workshop

How can digital geodata specifically support local authorities in planning, climate adaptation and prevention? This question was the focus of an online expert dialogue on 8 October, in which 22 representatives from local authorities of various sizes – from small municipalities to large cities – and from various state offices took part.

The workshop presented current approaches and data products on soil sealing, urban trees, heavy rainfall events and the effectiveness of climate adaptation measures, which were then discussed with the participants. The exchange showed that up-to-date, high-resolution and comprehensive information is becoming increasingly important for municipal tasks, for example in urban land-use planning, urban climate analyses and municipal monitoring.

Detailed sealing data enables a differentiated view of green and open spaces and helps to meet EU requirements for nature restoration. The recording of urban trees provides the basis for tree registers, shade analyses and urban climate modelling.

Regarding the topic of heavy rainfall, the focus was on identifying particularly affected areas and on the question of how protection and adaptation measures can be better evaluated.

With regard to climate adaptation measures, it became clear that local authorities increasingly want to consider the effects on a neighbourhood-specific and seasonal basis, taking future climate developments into account.

The workshop was characterised by an open, practical exchange. In addition to providing technical input, it offered a space to address requirements from municipal practice and further develop existing approaches. The materials presented in the workshop were made available to participants afterwards and serve as a basis for further in-depth study and cooperation.

Another meeting is planned for the end of 2026 as an in-person event. Interested local authorities and other users are invited to participate, contribute their experiences and provide feedback on the approaches presented.
