In the RESITEK project, the institutes are pooling innovative solutions to develop safe, efficient and coordinated remote guidance and mission planning for disaster protection.

Effective mission planning and safe remote guidance of emergency responders and resources are essential in the event of a disaster. Complex situations require coordinated control of manned and unmanned air and ground vehicles. RESITEK develops intelligent planning and communication solutions for this purpose, enabling flexible and transparent coordination of all resources and increasing the safety of all those involved. At the same time, situational awareness of the airspace used by first responders is improved, thereby significantly increasing safety during operations.

Together, the institutes pool their expertise to develop innovative solutions for safe, efficient and coordinated remote guidance and mission planning in disaster protection, thus making an important contribution to resilience and operational capability in crisis situations.

Institute of Communications and Navigation

Develops robust communication and navigation systems for use in crisis areas, including radio navigation, prediction of wireless communication availability and quality, and relative navigation for vehicles and drones. In particular, the work on predicting local wireless communication availability and quality for teleoperated vehicles and drones enables end users to carry out an additional risk assessment regarding connectivity in complex environments.

Institute of Flight Systems

Extends the capability of conventional camera drones towards crisis response tools that, using their local sensor data, supplement the overall situational picture, independently search for people in need of help and can also interact with them. At the same time, the institute is testing a specialized drone radar for its suitability in separating manned and unmanned aircraft in airspace during a crisis. The manned helicopter, as a universal first-responder option, is integrated into the developments and demonstrations as realistically as possible.

Institute of Flight Guidance

Develops central airspace management services and algorithms for mission planning and remote guidance of emergency responders and drones. Creates solutions for the coordinated planning and monitoring of missions, including search algorithms. Protects sensitive infrastructure and limits the operational area through geofencing. Provides a comprehensive picture of the airspace for the safe deployment of relief forces and resources.

Institute of Space Research

Brings comprehensive expertise and technologies for optical reconnaissance of large-scale disaster areas using manned and unmanned aircraft. We combine high-performance sensor technologies with our ability to map surveyed areas in real time. This is based on the DLR’s Modular Aerial Camera Systems (MACS) - a family of airborne camera systems with unique technical capabilities. A key focus of our work is the development of reliable and platform-independent methods for mission control. Resilient communication links and universal interfaces enable the operation of our sensor systems from anywhere in the world, independent of on-site technical personnel - which is essential for use in real-world crisis situations.
