RESITEK: Resilience of Power Grids
In the RESITEK project, models for assessing the resilience of infrastructure systems are developed and applied in different damage scenarios to derive technical and organizational strategies to ensure security of supply even in the event of a crisis.

Power grids are the backbone of our modern society, but they are increasingly exposed to a wide range of threats -- from natural disasters to cyberattacks. A failure can have far-reaching consequences for many areas of life. RESITEK analyzes damage scenarios, develops models for assessing resilience, and develops technical and organizational strategies to ensure security of supply even in crisis situations.

Together, these institutes create the scientific basis for identifying conceptual weaknesses in the power grid and developing measures to increase security of supply and resilience.

Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures

Analyzes the effects of various damage scenarios on the functionality of infrastructure systems such as power and transport networks, and models cascading dynamics between different infrastructures that can further impair the supply of the population. Develops quantitative methods that allow for the assessment of resilience-enhancing measures with regard to their potential to increase the population’s security of supply.

Institute of Atmospheric Physics

Develops models to assess the effects of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) on the power grid and provides important information on relevant space weather conditions.

German Remote Sensing Data Center

Combines various geospatial data and develops automated process chains to support the monitoring of critical infrastructure and the effects of incidents. Provides up-to-date situational information and scenarios, thereby enabling a rapid and targeted response to incidents.

Institute of Transport Research

Analyzes mobility behavior in disaster scenarios based on processed mobile phone data over an extended period around the 2021 Ahrtal floods. On this basis, a transport demand model is parameterized that can be used to simulate transport demand in a comparable scenario. In addition, the Institute for Transportation Research is investigating how bidirectional charging can help in the event of a disaster. By understanding user needs and barriers, we are developing strategies to significantly strengthen the local energy supply.

Institute of Networked Energy Systems

Models synthetic power distribution grids, extends the grid models with resilience measures, integrates bidirectionally charging electric vehicles, and simulates various operating strategies for disaster scenarios.
