IMoGer – Innovative modular mobility made in Germany

The IMoGer research project is the first to combine a public transport service and courier, express and parcel logistics (CEP logistics) with the automated, modular U-Shift vehicle concept from DLR. This holistic mobility solution for the last mile is designed to reduce traffic congestion and stands for sustainability and efficiency. In the "Schwarzer Berg" neighbourhood of Braunschweig, a small fleet is being set up as a test operation to create the basis for the further development and design of the innovative transport system.

The growing mobility of people and goods poses major challenges for cities and municipalities. High costs for local public transport, environmental pollution and staff shortages call for innovative and future-proof solutions. These must be efficient, focus on people's needs and work in rural areas. The combination of local public transport and courier, express and parcel logistics (CEP logistics) as well as automation technologies harbours great potential for municipalities and operators.

Modular vehicles for less traffic congestion

IMoGer combines public transport and CEP logistics for the first time to create a holistic mobility approach for the last mile. It focuses on automated, digitalised transport – for greater sustainability and efficiency. At the centre of the project is a modular electric vehicle in a networked fleet. By using the vehicle for public transport and CEP transport needs, the aim is to reduce traffic congestion, plan routes more efficiently and create needs-based services. With this goal, IMoGer is a pioneer for automated, modular mobility services made in Germany and creates the basis for innovative transport systems.

Driverless fleet network drives in Braunschweig

The U-Shift, an automated, modular vehicle concept developed by DLR, consists of a driving platform and interchangeable passenger and goods capsules. In IMoGer, a small fleet of nine such U-Shift modules is to be set up and approved for the first time as a driverless, barrier-free service for trial operation in the "Schwarzer Berg" district of Braunschweig. The safety of the overall system is guaranteed by technical supervision and a supporting, intelligent transport infrastructure. Citizens and other stakeholders will be involved from the outset. IMoGer lays the foundations for the regular operation of a combined, automated service as well as the entire process from authorisation to practical application - including transferability to other regions.
