In order to fulfil their tasks, Earth observation satellites are equipped with high-precision measuring devices. These include optical instruments such as spectral cameras, radar devices and lidar systems (Lidar: Light Detection and Ranging). They make it possible to record a wide range of data: from water temperatures to the growth phases of plants or wind speeds through to gas concentrations in the atmosphere. This makes them essential for monitoring the environment, mapping, meteorology and numerous other areas of application. To make ever more precise measurements a reality, innovative sensor technologies are constantly being developed for use in space.
