CubeISL

Laser communication in the inter-satellite range

In CubeISL, based on the OSIRIS4CubeSat development, the technology of laser communication is transferred to the intersatellite domain. In addition, the data rate in the connection to the earth is increased tenfold.

In order to be able to use the advantages of Free Space Optical (FSO) communication in constellations and mega constellations, the OSIRIS4CubeSat terminal is being further developed in CubeISL to establish bidirectional data transmission via laser between two (and more) satellites - in addition to the connection between satellite and ground station.

The modular approach in OSIRIS4CubeSat allows an easy extension of the basic development by the required subsystems. In addition to a receiver and a powerful transmitter, CubeISL will have its own onboard computer for data processing. This enables, in addition to the inter-satellite link, a tenfold increase in the data rate for satellite-to-ground transmission.

The potential of this technology will be demonstrated on two 6U CubeSats in a satellite mission together with the Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³).
