EXACT
Concept Study for ecoefficient flying

Exploration of Electric Aircraft Concepts and Technologies

Duration: 1.January.2020 - 31.December.2023

The "EXACT" (Exploration of Electric Aircraft Concepts and Technologies) project, led by the Institute for System Architectures in Aviation, is investigating propulsion concepts for short-haul aircraft with significantly reduced emissions and less noise, considering batteries, fuel cells and hydrogen. The effects on the entire ecological and aviation system, i.e. on airports, airlines, air traffic control and the atmosphere are examined.

The Institute for Air Transport is initially contributing to the project with the air traffic forecast for the air traffic system 2040, which is enhanced by the new aircraft concepts. The attractiveness and operating scenarios of the new aircraft concepts are determined on the basis of their respective cost position and flight performance. Airline operational aspects and the passenger perspective are included, especially with regard to the cruising speed of the aircraft. Finally, the effects of using the new aircraft concepts on emissions and climate impact are determined.
