Focus on Low-Cost Airlines in Germany

Twice a year, the DLR MONITOR Air Transport and Low-Cost is published by the DLR Institute of Air Transport. This report highlights the latest developments among low-cost airlines operating in Germany and, as of 2025, replaces the previously established DLR Low Cost Monitor.

Since 2006, the report has provided key insights into the low-cost air travel market, regularly presenting data and analyses on the number and significance of low-cost carriers, their route offerings and fares, as well as passenger demand for low-cost services. With the introduction of the new format, the scope has been broadened: in addition to in-depth analysis of the German market, the report now also includes global developments in the low-cost sector and evaluations of trends in Europe and at airports near the German border.

This report continues to be of considerable importance, as changes in this segment have a direct impact on the overall air transport system in Germany. These developments affect not only airports and airlines themselves, but also a wide range of stakeholders – from regional economies to individual travellers.

In addition to the biannual report, the DLR also publishes the Global Aviation Monitor on a monthly basis, providing a detailed overview of global air traffic trends.
