Trends in low-cost air travel in Germany

The animation shows the development of low-cost air travel in Germany from 2000 to 2025. After humble beginnings with just a few airlines and routes, the network expanded rapidly, particularly between 2002 and 2008, reaching its peak by 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a massive slump from 2020 onwards. Since 2022, the network has been gradually rebuilt, albeit with significantly fewer domestic German connections. Today, the German low-cost market is dominated primarily by Eurowings, Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet.

Results from the DEPA 2070 Project

Development of Global Aviation CO₂ Emissions up to the Year 2070

The animations illustrate the projected CO₂ emissions in the conservative and progressive development scenarios of the DLR project DEPA 2070. Although air traffic is expected to nearly double between 2019 and 2070, both DEPA 2070 scenarios – conservative and progressive – show a significant reduction in CO₂ emissions. This positive trend is primarily based on the assumption of technological advancements and a shift in energy sources used in aviation.

DEPA 2070 Progressive Fleet Scenario

In the progressive scenario, hydrogen aircraft and electric propulsion systems enter the market at an early stage, enabling a particularly high CO₂ savings potential of up to 89 percent per 100 passenger-kilometres.

DEPA 2070 Conservative Fleet Scenario

In the conservative scenario, the technological shift takes place significantly later, with a gradual transition to sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). SAF play an important role in both scenarios and are, in particular, the main factor in the conservative scenario for a potential CO₂ reduction of emissions per 100 passenger-kilometres by 23 percent.
