Development of tourist air traffic

The annual report published in spring by the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) Institute of Air Transport analyses developments in the air transport services planned by airlines in Europe and Germany. It analyses both tourist air traffic and various destinations with different levels of tourism intensity and provides an outlook for the coming summer months.

The latest DLR Tourism Report forecasts further growth in the number of tourist flights in Germany for summer 2026 - even if the total volume remains below the 2019 level.

Air traffic continues to recover, but remains below the 2019 level. Tourism routes in particular are driving growth, while the dynamics between airports and the airlines' shares continue to shift.

Air traffic forecast for summer 2024

Compared to the previous year, the number of flights increased by 5.3 per cent. However, this figure is still 20.5 per cent below the level before the coronavirus pandemic. The most popular destinations are Turkey and Spain, but Italy and Greece also recorded increases.

Study on air travel in summer 2023

Air traffic in Germany in summer 2023 is expected to be 24.5 per cent lower than in 2019. Around 3.1 million flights are currently planned worldwide for July 2023, which corresponds to around 90 per cent of the pre-corona volume of 2019.
