CAESAR and SpaceHand at the IAC 2022
A variable tool for space exploration and assistance is the subject of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which will take place in Paris from 18 to 22 September 2022. The Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics is presenting the robotic systems CAESAR (Compliant Assistance and Exploration SpAce Robot) and SpaceHand at the IAC.
CAESAR is a robotic arm developed as part of the "Orbital Service" domain. It can perform a variety of different tasks in space, such as assembling structures, maintaining and repairing satellites or removing space debris. The key to CAESAR's performance is its intelligent impedance- and position-controlled joints. The individual joints can be arranged variably depending on the mission requirements. The SpaceHand is a space-qualified robotic hand developed for long-term use in geostationary orbit. It is able to operate the same devices that an astronaut uses in an external mission.
The IAC is an annual congress, which is being held for the 73rd time this year. The host city is Paris with the motto "Space for @ll". Over 250 exhibitors and more than 6500 trade visitors are expected to attend. There will also be an extensive programme of specialist lectures and workshops. Non-experts will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition on 21 September 2022 at the "Public Day". Prior registration is required.
In this context, the CAESAR and SpaceHand systems developed at the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics will be exhibited. The two exhibits will be on display at the DLR stand in Hall 7.2 Stand F7 at the Paris Convention Centre.
