Prof Alin Albu-Schäffer is a new acatech member
Institute Director Prof. Albu-Schäffer was presented as a new acatech member at the celebratory event of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) on 18 October 2022 in Berlin. Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz gave the keynote speech. "The German Academy of Science and Engineering is characterised by the fact that it thinks through innovations from idea to application and brings science, industry and society together," said the Federal Chancellor.
Together with 21 other renowned scientists from the fields of engineering, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences at the acatech Assembly, Prof. Albu-Schäffer was admitted to the Academy on 19 October 2021. Members of acatech are elected on the basis of their outstanding scientific achievements and reputation. Across Germany, around 600 acatech members are involved in the Academy's interdisciplinary working groups and networks. They use their expertise to advise policymakers and society on technology science issues with a technology policy background. In addition, the transfer of knowledge between science and industry and the promotion of young STEM talents are among the tasks of acatech and its members.
The Director of the DLR Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics was elected to the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech in November 2021. The election is an honour for scientific achievement and an honorary mandate: the academy, which is funded by the federal and state governments, advises politicians and society on technology-related issues.
As part of the acatech ceremony, President Jan Wörner outlined the current challenges facing innovation policy: "Together with its European and global partners, Germany must achieve strategic sovereignty that encompasses security, resilience and sustainability. We can only achieve this triad through innovation. We need resilient value creation, supply and innovation networks without one-sided dependencies. The maxim here must be that we equip rather than arm – in international partnership. National egocentrism and self-sufficiency will not help."
