AIAMO launches pilot operation in Leipzig and showcases solutions at Data Week

By combining the KeepMoving software suite with the SUMO simulation, the DLR has created a digital twin of the city of Leipzig.

In the research project AIAMO – Artificial Intelligence And MObility, AI-supported solutions for environmentally sensitive mobility management are being developed and tested in the pilot regions. The applications are being developed on the basis of specific local authority requirements and use cases. The tools and solutions developed for Leipzig have now been made available to the relevant stakeholders in the Mobility and Civil Engineering Office, the Office for Environmental Protection and the Digital City Department for testing and assessment of their practical suitability.

The applications enable improved assessment of traffic flow, air quality and environmental impacts, and lay the groundwork for a more informed evaluation of transport-related measures. Key components include digital twins for mobility and the environment, AI-based analysis and forecasting, and solutions for the dynamic management of traffic lights and for supporting sustainable mobility choices.

As part of the AIAMO project, Leipzig aims to develop transport solutions to help ensure compliance with the European air quality limits that will come into force from 2030. Particular focus is placed on areas within the city with high pollution levels, as well as on how mobility in this growing city can be made more environmentally friendly and user-centred in the future. This data is consolidated within the AIAMOnexus integration zone – AIAMO’s central infrastructure – via standardised interfaces with additional mobility and environmental information from various sources, and made available for AI applications with the help of powerful AI Foundation Models.

The solutions developed in collaboration with Leipzig include, amongst other things, digital twins for transport and the environment. Researchers at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) have used the software suite KeepMoving and the simulation software SUMO for this purpose. The digital twin also utilises data from AIAMOnexus – ranging from floating car data from connected vehicles to environmental and weather data, right through to public transport information – thereby enabling a virtual representation of key mobility and environmental processes in the city. Traffic flows, environmental impacts and interactions between different forms of mobility can thus be analysed, simulated and predicted with far greater precision than before.

This will, for example, enable the impacts of roadworks, major events or changes to traffic routing to be better analysed in future, and allow for the technical assessment of different scenarios. Particular focus is placed on the area surrounding the stadium on event days, as well as on areas affected by heavy traffic and environmental pollution – so-called ‘hotspots’. In these areas, the applications developed are intended to help identify congestion situations more effectively and support the assessment of possible measures. In addition, there is the dynamic control of traffic light systems, which adapts signal cycles to the current traffic situation and can thus help improve traffic flow, particularly in congested areas.

Public transport can also be integrated more effectively into environmentally sensitive mobility management and linked with other mobility options. In addition, AIAMO is developing applications to help citizens make environmentally friendly mobility choices. These include, for example, multimodal route suggestions that intelligently combine public transport, car-sharing schemes and other forms of transport. These functions are complemented by incentive schemes designed to specifically encourage sustainable travel behaviour.

The solution now made available comprises key components of these applications and forms the basis for further practical trials in Leipzig. The solutions developed in Leipzig are intended to be transferable to other cities and regions in future. In doing so, AIAMO is pursuing the aim of providing scalable and interoperable systems for modern municipal mobility management.

The DLR will soon be showcasing its KeepMoving software suite to interested visitors at Tag der offenen Tür on 20 and 21 June 2026 at the Federal Ministry of Transport in Berlin.
