The cloud-based SESAM platform
SESAM is a cloud-native platform for creating, running and analysing microscopic, multimodal mobility simulations. Scenarios are created directly in the browser, simulated on a high-performance cluster in the cloud using Eclipse SUMO, and then visually analysed and compared – for example, to investigate the traffic impacts of infrastructure measures.

In 2019, the scientist Dr Robert Hilbrich founded Consultancy for Engineers (co4e) GmbH as a spin-off from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The Berlin-based company develops software tools and engineering methods that support people and, increasingly, autonomous software agents in planning, designing, and analyzing complex technical systems. Its focus includes transport and mobility systems as well as distributed and safety-critical systems.

With the ASSIST Tool Suite, co4e supports the systematic design of complex technical systems, in particular "multicore-based safety-critical real-time systems". Design alternatives can be explored and optimized automatically, software can be mapped to hardware platforms, and timing and safety-related properties can be taken into account early in the design process. This enables complex system architectures to be developed more efficiently and virtually integrated at an early stage.

With SESAM, co4e provides a cloud-based platform for creating, running, and analyzing large-scale mobility simulations and digital twins. Based on the traffic simulation software SUMO, originally developed at DLR and now maintained as an Eclipse project, SESAM can be used to investigate, for example, new transport concepts, infrastructure measures, or automated driving functions.

co4e combines modern engineering methods, simulation, and artificial intelligence to make complex planning and design tasks more accessible and increasingly automatable. Simulation is one of several tools that enable humans and autonomous agents to understand, explore, and purposefully shape complex systems.
