RM crawlers in the Osterburg Weida Museum

From 26 March, the 2021 annual exhibition at the Osterburg Museum will provide an exciting insight into the development of computer and communication technology and its impact on culture and society. The exhibition on the topic of "Digitalisation in a nutshell" focuses on the development of the modern information society. The RM robot 'Krabbler' is also at the start.

Krabbler is the name of the exploration robot that was completed in 2008 as an experimental system for testing various gait, control and navigation algorithms. Development engineer Martin Görner says: "The Crawler was the institute's first small research robot on the subject of walking robotics with torque sensors – we are delighted that it is now being used in the museum and is inspiring the next generation of robotics enthusiasts."

What is a KC85 again? What do hackers do? What is a nerd? And what does the internet have to do with all of this? The exhibition at the Osterburg and accompanying events are designed to help people find their way in the modern information society. The computer began its triumphal march through the world over 50 years ago.

Almost every aspect of our everyday lives is now determined by computer technology. Smartphones, tablets and laptops have become an integral part of most people's everyday lives. The exhibition not only explores the origins of these developments, but also the social impact and highlights the challenges of our information age – globalisation, networking and the spread of information and communication technology. Both informative and playful, it deals with networked mobility, the working world of tomorrow, the blending of real and digital reality and how technology can support people with disabilities.

The exhibition also includes regional references: information technology produced in East Thuringia that was used in the GDR is on display. Companies that develop hardware and software in the region are also presented. The exhibition's world of experience is complemented by events that demonstrate the effects of information technology and address the challenges of our information age. Robot workshops, for example, will give visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves directly in digital worlds. The exhibition is expected to run until 18 January 2022.
